During his 17 years with Kent County Youth Orchestra, Alan appeared regularly in Kent and beyond conducting works such as Mahler’s 2nd and 8th Symphonies as part of an annual series of concerts at the Royal Festival Hall, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at the Royal Albert Hall, The Planets in Paris, Belshazzar’s Feast in Buenos Aires, and Peter Grimes and The Rite of Spring for the Canterbury Festival. With his choirs and orchestras he has worked with soloists such as Susan Bullock, Robert Cohen, Peter Donohoe, Evelyn Glennie, Michael George, Martyn Hill, Neil Jenkins, Joanna MacGregor, Emma Kirkby and John Lill.
In 2001, Alan relinquished his youth music posts in order to devote more time to work with Kent Chamber Choir, Gravesham Choral Society, and composing and freelance conducting. He remains committed to youth music, however, and is frequently invited back to work with young Kent musicians.
Alan Vincent believes it important for youngsters and adults to perform together and alongside professional musicians. This has inspired his compositions such as: Dover Music 2000 - for the town’s schools, music centre band and choral society; Magnificat - premiered at Mote Hall, Maidstone in 2002 by Kent Chamber Choir, London Brass and massed youth brass, and repeated in 2005 by Gravesham Choral Society and Jubilate Brass; and Sing Joyfully - a setting of psalms and poems for Emma Kirkby, Kent Chamber Choir, Kent Youth Choirs, harpsichord and organ, first performed at Rochester Cathedral in October 2003 and repeated in 2005 in Croydon with young choirs from Bexley and Bromley.
